Oceanhorn is one of the three mighty Living Fortresses, created by Archimedes to defend Arcadia. It has the same features as the other Living Fortresses except for being red in color. Oceanhorn is the only one of the Living Fortresses to survive for a full thousand years after the Catastrophe, when it is finally slain by the Kid, the descendant of its former pilot Trin.
Synopsis[]
Pre-Catastrophe[]
Oceanhorn appears for the first time after its completion during a training session with Trin[1]. It is officially unveiled some time later by Archimedes in front of Hero, Master Mayfair, Gen and his granddaughter Trin.[2]
When the Knights travel to Submeria for their second mission, Oceanhorn follows them through the ocean and can be found swimming in circles around the Great Lagoon's Beacon Ootheca. Getting in the way of its path will immediately force the Hero to respawn, but other than that Oceanhorn is harmless.
Trin summons Oceanhorn with her flute when the Dark Army passes by Submeria and attacks the lagoon. She uses the Living Fortress to attack the enemy forces. Oceanhorn climbs on and jumps from freighter to freighter and causes great destruction with its Death Ray, stopping the attack and forcing Mesmeroth to retreat. When the Knights arrives back in White City just before TRILOTH hits, Oceanhorn is waiting for its pilot at the pier. Trin and the Hero board it and attempt to fight TRILOTH but are sucked into it instead. They find themselves in the Tranquility, where the Great Chronicler awaits them and sends them back into the world of Arcadia to survive the threat of TRILOTH. Once they arrive back nearby the White City, the effects of TRILOTH take their toll on the machine. It has been corrupted and starts to chase after Trin, calling her name continuously. It follows Trin and Hero back into the ruins of the White City where it tries to destroy them both. The two Knights, however, manage to weaken it temporarily and escape, leaving a confused Oceanhorn behind.
Note on Canon Discrepancy[]
According to Hermit in Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas, Oceanhorn participates in the Direfolk War led by Mesmeroth against Arcadia. This particular piece of lore, however, is changed in Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm, where the Direfolk War is already concluded before the Living Fortresses are developed. Mesmeroth does not fight on the side of the Direfolk and instead sends his Dark Army of automatons to battle - but is defeated by the Living Fortresses. TRILOTH is utilized afterwards and corrupts the Living Fortresses to go against their pilots.
Post-Catastrophe[]
Over the years, Oceanhorn has gone underwater, ever continuing its search for Trin. The corruption remained because of Mesmeroth’s curses upon the Sacred Emblems. It ravages across the Uncharted Seas, striking terror into the hearts of Arcadians ever since.
After Mary, a bearer of the Emblem of Sun in form of a necklace, falls from Sky Island, some part of Oceanhorn wakes up and it starts to seek a descendant of Trin’s bloodline. Eventually its search leads to a certain island, where Mary now lives with her son and her husband - Trin's distant descendant. Unfortunately it kills Mary, causing her husband to start on a journey in attempts to defeat Oceanhorn for good.
Just before the events of Monster of Uncharted Seas, an old and battered Oceanhorn emerges from the ocean to face the Kid's Father. The Father manages to control Oceanhorn one more time and can keep it sleeping inside the remains of the ruins of the White City. Meanwhile, his son begins HIS journey to find his missing father and defeat Oceanhorn.
It awakens once more time under Shadow Mesmeroth's control and attempts to kill the Kid. After it is being weakened by electrical pylons, Shadow Mesmeroth uses the Dark Apostle to fight the Kid directly but when beaten for long enough the robot returns to Oceanhorn. In that crucial moment, the Kid plays Oceanhorn's melody on his ancestor’s ancient flute. Now under the control of a pilot once more, it follows the boy’s instructions and rams into the Dark Apostle, pushing them both over the cliff. In an explosion of red light it finally destroys not only itself, but the Dark Apostle as well. Without a machine to bond to, Mesmeroth's soul and the Shadow finally move on to the Tranquility and are gone once and for all.
Battle[]
Tactics in OH1[]
Phase 1
Oceanhorn's minor weak-points are two power-cells, which are located on each side of his main body, emitting a bright white light. Oceanhorn has to be immobilized temporarily so that the Kid can destroy the energy cells.
Attack
Oceanhorn fires a laser beam from its single eye (very little damage), throws bombs (massive damage!) and stomps its giant legs to crush its opponent. It's hard for the player to evade all these attacks, since Oceanhorn follows the Kid's movements. Yet it is possible if the Kid is quick enough using the Trencher Boots and utilizes the Shield of Chronos to negate the laser beam attack.
Bringing Oceanhorn down - Tactic One
A quick way to do this is to use Arrows - the first arrow strikes one of Oceanhorn's legs and immobilizes it, the second arrow damages the energy cell. This process has to be repeated until the power cells are destroyed and Oceanhorn's weak-spot appears.
Bringing Oceanhorn down - Tactic Two
Another way is to use the Shield of Chronos to direct Oceanhorn's laser beam onto one of it's legs. Then use the Trencher Boots to roll quickly towards the accessible energy cell and attack it with the sword. This process has to be repeated until the power cells are destroyed and Oceanhorn's weak-spot appears.
Defense
Oceanhorn is impervious so any attack, but has three weak-points:
- its legs - hit them with your sword, arrows or its laser beam to immobilize Oceanhorn for a moment
- its power cells - hit them once Oceanhorn is down
- its golden weak-point - it apperas after both power cells were attacked and shut off
Usually there are three rounds of attacking Oceanhorn's golden weak-point required. After that the evil machine jumps up and disappears in the stormy sky.
Supplies
If the Kid is low on health, mana or items, he can throw the many pots standing around or wait for Oceanhorn's bombs to destroy them. Oceanhorn does not stop its attacks while the Kid replenishes his stats! If you have reached the Master Adventurer Level, using the Cure Spell (acquired at Graveyard Island) straight after you have struck one of Oceanhorn's cells is a helpful and relatively risk free way of replenishing three hearts at a time (only one, if below Master level).
Phase 2
The second part of the battle takes place on a roof in the White City ruins. Once the Kid reaches the top of the White City, he will encounter Oceanhorn again, visibly possessed by the essence of Shadow Mesmeroth.
Attack
The monster begins hurling bombs again at the Kid and summons Spawns to attack him. Direct attacks are useless on Oceanhorn at this point.
Defense
Oceanhorn is impervious to any direct attack. However, Oceanhorn is weak towards electricity. Run around the arena and activate the turbines (equipping the Trencher Boots is helpful) in order to make Oceanhorn fall when it walks into a line of electricity. Caution is required as running into the electricity yourself will instantly kill you, regardless of how many hearts you have left.
Tactics in OH2[]
Defeating Oceanhorn
The fight takes place in the ruins of the White City.
Attack
Oceanhorn will utilize its Death Ray (minor damage), fire burning rockets (equivalent to bombs - massive damage!) and its legs to charge at and stomp on Hero. Try to avoid any close contact by dodge rolling, staying behind ledges and rubble and keep moving around with the Grappling Hook!
Defense
Direct attacks don't work on Oceanhorn. Instead, small specs of (presumably) TRILOTH appear above Oceanhorn that when shot at with the Caster Gun's normal Ammo, expand and pull the Fortress up and inside. This will expose Oceanhorn's golden weak-spots.
Use any long-ranged attack to hit those weak-spots. If there are non left, utitlize the specks of TRILOTH again to expose more of Oceanhorn's weak-spots. Repeat this process until you hit the cutscene and end the fight.
SuppliesIf Hero runs out of supplies, he can smash pots, search for treasures or use the Genco Vending Machine to buy Ammo. Oceanhorn may continue to attack and move closer, but Hero does not take any damage.
Tarock Card Description[]
"Living Fortress - One of the three Living Fortresses, Oceanhorn is piloted by Trin, the granddaughter of Grand Regent Archimedes. As one of the most majestic machines ever constructed, Oceanhorn is featured with cutting-edge technology - it is a quadrupedal mecha that can outrun a hoverbike, and its powerful tail enables high speed maneuverability in water. Oceanhorn got its name from the mythical basilisk of the past and that might also be the inspiration for its mighty weapon, Death Ray, fired from its cyclop's eye."
