“Unfortunately my armada is… unstoppable. But you shouldn’t be afraid of me, or the might that is under my command. Shake before the High Regent, who holds Arcadia in his palm.”
(Mesmeroth)
Quote-deco

Mesmeroth is a powerful warlock and former member of the Mage Guild, who served Arcadia in the Direfolk War. Originally from Faroah, Mesmeroth comes to the White City to study magic and become a warlock. He fights alongside Sir Corbin and Master Mayfair in the Direfolk War but after his victory over Shadowmaga and acquisition of the Guardian of the Realm’s mask (which made him witness the Streams of Creation with his own eyes), he is cast aside by Archimedes and thus leaves the White City to focus on his studies of the world. He inadvertently creates a child from an Anima Orb at Arne Beacon but is unable to take care of the baby and leaves the boy in Master Mayfair’s care. Having turned against Archimedes' plan to use the untamed power of the Sacred Emblems to return to the world where life in Gaia originated (partly by being manipulated by the Shadow), he creates the Dark Army to move war against Arcadia and force Archimedes to step down from his plans.

Appearance[]

Mesmeroth-appearance

Mesmeroth wearing the purple robes of the mages.

Mesmeroth is a tall, slim but trained human male (similar to Hero, Master Mayfair and human Sir Corbin). He wears a hooded, long purple robe, grey pauldrons with leather straps around his shoulders, long leather gloves, leather boots and a large leather belt with a single golden ring attached to its front left side. He wears a half length purple cape. His face is covered entirely by the Guardian’s of the Realm mask, resembling a human skull with glowing red eyes and featuring large golden stag antlers.

Before putting on the mask, Mesmeroth had slicked back, medium-short black hair and sideburns. His eye-colour was dark and his skin white. He did not wear gloves at the time and had exposed underarms and hands. The rest of the outfit was the same.

It seems that his height changes throughout the game. He is his tallest during his boss battle at the Riskbourne Citadel, where he towers over Hero by a good two heads and closest to his former self when talking to Trin privately.

Personality[]

He was a lonely and sickly child, unable to work in the fields,[9] who rather played alone in the caves and tunnels around Faroah[10] and his failed robot experiments may not have earned him any favours[11][12][13]. It seems that young Mesmeroth had trouble to socially connect to others.[14] As a young boy, he felt misunderstood, only wanting to be accepted with his interests and abilities. He reacts by abusing his abilities to hurt, blackmail and spread distrust.[15] Nonetheless, he fosters no real ill-will against the other villagers.[16]

As adult, Mesmeroth presents himself generally a serious but relaxed person. Tension and emotions are expressed through his refined speech rather than movement (such as bitterness when discussing Archimedes), especially as facial expressions are impossible. He is happy to answer questions in detail and inadvertently helps Hero to acquire a stronger weapon by sending him back to Sir Corbin’s grave in Faroah[17]. Mesmeroth can also be light-hearted, as he laughs and enjoys his fight when challenged by Hero[18] and is amused by Archimedes’s fear when he presents the captured Shadow. He also expresses sorrow when he releases Sir Corbin’s soul from Gen[19] and apologises to Trin for the abduction (and thus protection against her will) and wishes they could have met under better circumstances[20]. He is persistent in his plans, however, and does not accept actions against his will[21].

He seems to feel anger towards Archimedes probably not just because of their different views, but because of Archimedes' jealousy and banishment of him.[22] Even though his resentment against Archimedes is a great motivator behind his actions, Mesmeroth has not laid hands on Archimedes himself and in the end leaves the old man to his own fate.

He appears as a somewhat sympathetic figure who attempts to reason with Archimedes and wants Hero and Trin to become King and Queen from the ashes of Arcadia, but as predicted by the Great Chronicler[23], over time (before and during the thousand years between the games) he becomes a power-hungry egotist who takes the Sacred Emblems under his control with a set of curses in order to build a world to his liking and rule it as its god[24] (although this is still up to debate if this was all perpetrated by the Shadow’s hold over his soul).

Mesmeroth plays Tarock as well but can be a sore loser, as he had a Bot Warrior imprisoned after losing in Tarock against him.[25]

Synopsis[]

History[]

Mesmeroth comes from a town in the north-east of Gaia, Faroah[26]. He is a sickly child, unable to do manual labour.[9] His mother is affectionate towards him but dies during his childhood.[27] He is a curious youth who enjoys reading and learning about the world[28]. He loves technology and robots and after quite a handful of failures and ensuing trouble that are threats to the well-being and stability of the village[11][12][13], he successfully builds Gen as a servant (and friend). He loves to explore the nearby caves and ravines and eventually stumbles upon some ancient artifacts and Beacon technology[29]. His finding is reported to Archimedes and the Grand Regent comes to investigate, bringing with him his wife Calliope and Master Mayfair. Mesmeroth meets Calliope in the streets and they bond over their shared interest in literature and knowledge[30][31]. When Mesmeroth shows off Gen and demonstrates that he can make some of the old technology function again[32], even Archimedes is taken aback by the boy's talent[33]. Not soon after, at age 14, Mesmeroth joins the Order of All Gods in the White City and starts studying magic more closely[34][35][36]. He becomes the most talented and skilled warlock to leave the Order[37] and joins Master Mayfair and Sir Corbin in the war against the Direfolk[38].

At some point during his service to Archimedes, he is tasked to collect the Emblem of Earth from Pirta. The Owrus try to stop him but as they are not allowed to enter their Sacred Grounds, Mesmeroth can safely study the Beacon's technology and take the Emblem back to the White City.[39][40]

At 24 years, Mesmeroth travels with his comrades to the Outlands and faces Shadowmaga at the Riskbourne Citadel. While Sir Corbin and Master Mayfair were tossed aside by the creature[41], Mesmeroth defeated it with a single spell[42]. The Guardian of the Realm’s mask remained and Mesmeroth placed it on his face, realising too late that it won’t come off[43]. When he sees his friends wounded, he rushes to their aid[44]. He is too late to safe the life of Sir Corbin, but through the eyes of the mask, he can see Sir Corbin’s soul leaving his body[45]. He uses the moment to magically bind the soul to Gen[46]. With the acquisition of the mask, Mesmeroth decides to take on this name and it has been respected by everyone since, leaving his original name unspoken.

Mesmeroth warden

Mesmeroth heads towards the Arne Beacon

Upon his return to the White City he is widely celebrated as a saviour but Mesmeroth hides from the fame[47]. Distraught he tries to remove the mask several times at night, but he does not succeed[48]. When Mesmeroth does not receive the support and appreciation from Archimedes that he hoped for[49] and is banished instead,[22] the young warlock leaves the White City for good[47], leaving Gen behind with Master Mayfair. Mesmeroth travels all of Gaia, visiting the Beacons to find answers about the structure of the world[50].

Mesmeroth, now a shunned warlock, returns briefly to attend Calliope's funeral, a big event in the White City.[51]

Mesmeroth carrying baby

Mesmeroth holds his artificial child out of the machinery room

About a year or two later, he examines Arne Beacon in greater detail and makes the ancient technology work again[52]. As an unexpected result he witnesses the artificial birth of a human baby[53], infused with a soul of another world; said world later revealed to be the planet where the Emblems and Beacons came from and all life from Gaia originated.

Unable to keep the baby due to the appearance of his mask[54], and because the Shadow's influence inside him is growing deeper, thus causing seeds of resentment and disagreement towards Archimedes, Mesmeroth contacts Master Mayfair in the nearby town of Arne. He meets with Master Mayfair and Gen under the broken arcades nearby the Beacon. He presents the baby boy and hands him over to Master Mayfair, hoping he would raise the child in his stead[55], as the boy should not suffer from the mistakes Mesmeroth made.

Mesmeroth then retreats and sets up his base at the Riskbourne Citadel in the Outlands, where the development of his army begins, as he now knows of Archimedes' plans to use the Grand Core to launch his kingdom to the stars and vows to stop him.[56] He has since not been in contact with anybody and is by many believed to be dead.[57]

The warlock continues to create automatons and experiements, some of which are still considered failures and unfit for his Dark Army,[58]a reminder of his humble but troublesome beginnings creating robots.[11]

Pre-Catastrophe[]

Eighteen years later, just after the knights have returned both the Emblem of Earth and Ocean to the top of their respective Beacons, Mesmeroth is finally ready to launch an attack on the White City and moves with his armada across the ocean. Archimedes is prepared however, and sends the Living Fortresses for a counter-attack. As his ground forces are being destroyed, the hero, Master Mayfair and Gen enter Mesmeroth’s command air ship. The warlock calmly welcomes the knights, assuring them that they do not need to fear him and proceeds to warn them about Archimedes instead[59], saying that he seeks to "put a leash on the gods," and that he is too dangerous for the realm. At the end of the conversation Mesmeroth releases Sir Corbin’s soul from Gen, effectively “killing” him, in order to take Gen back under his control. He teleports both himself and Gen to another place, telling the knights to go visit Sir Corbin’s grave in Faroah as he is now dead.

Mesmeroth and the remainder of his army return to the Riskbourne Citadel and he walks about his throne hall. He is visited by the Shadow and is offered a spell to control TRILOTH[60], a mass of frighteningly destructive dark energy remains from the creation of Gaia. He calmly responds that he has been awaiting the Shadow’s arrival[61].

Knowing about the destruction to come, Mesmeroth travels to Source where he intercepts and abducts Hero and Trin at Source, as they attempt to return the Emblem of Sun, the final piece of the plan to operate the Grand Core's ascension. He takes the Emblem of Sun and their equipment and returns with his prisoners to the Riskbourne Citadel. In order to have a private chat with Trinity, he has her transferred to his tower. He expresses his regret over how they were unable to meet under better circumstances and explains that both she and Hero are special; they are both Awoken Ones that were summoned from two souls from another world. He assures her that he only wishes for them both to be alive and be able to claim Arcadia as rightful king and queen after the catastrophe[62].

Mesmeroth then walks to the top of another high tower in order to raise TRILOTH from the depths of the nearby desert lands. He is about to board his command ship and direct TRILOTH towards the White City when he is being intercepted by Hero. He humors the boy's attempt to stop him and not only recounts the boy’s origin story, but also engages him in combat. Instead of fighting in person, however, Mesmeroth uses an apparition to fight. When Hero defeats the apparition, the real Mesmeroth appears and congratulates the knight on his victory[63]. He brings their encounter to an end by teleporting the hero to a location by the feet of the citadel and then leaves the Riskbourne Citadel in his command ship.

While TRILOTH appears at the horizon of the White City, Mesmeroth teleports ahead and into the Grand Core to face Archimedes. The Grand Regent accuses Mesmeroth to be a servant of the Shadow[64], to which Mesmeroth simply laughs[65] and reveals a crystal in which the Shadow is imprisoned. Archimedes is astonished[66] to see that Mesmeroth was seemingly able to remove the creature so easily from the Guardian of the Realm's mask and Mesmeroth proceeds to destroy the crystal[67]. He requests that the Grand Regent stop his project and step down to allow everyone to live another day[68]. When Archimedes refuses and starts to operate the Grand Core, he reveals that the knights never returned the Emblem of Sun to the top of the Source Beacon and that the Grand Core will fail and never reach beyond the atmosphere since all three Emblems have to be at the top of their Beacons in order to power the Grand Core[69]. He announces that Archimedes will die here in the destruction and that Mesmeroth himself has claimed a place in the Stream of Creation[70]. He then morphs into an Anima Orb using his magic, counting to be ressurrected back at the Citadel.[71] As the camera zooms in, the Shadow’s eyes appear within the orb, suggesting that it was not destroyed after all and that it is merging with Mesmeroth’s immortal soul which would inhabit Grand Core, leading to the appearance of Shadow Mesmeroth a thousand years later.

Post-Catastrophe[]

Quote-end Main page: Shadow Mesmeroth

As Shadow Mesmeroth, he aims to be resurrected as Gaia's god possibly alongside the Shadow.[24] His distant descendant, however, thwarts his plans and defeats him both inside the Grand Core and as part of the final battle against Oceanhorn. Afterwards his soul finally passes on to eternity after all Arcadian machines are inaccessible for him to live within.

Battle[]

Defeating Mesmeroth in Oceanhorn 2

Attack
Mesmeroth will attack Hero in various ways:

  • He uses his staff for a simple, direct attack. This can be blocked using the shield, sometimes even stunning Mesmeroth for a short period of time.
  • Mesmeroth attacks with his staff, but has a strange purple glowing force field around him, which automatically stuns Hero should he take any action (attack or defence). It is thus best to avoid getting close to Mesmeroth and resort to either the Caster Gun or use the time to smash pots to replentish stats.
  • Mesmeroth teleports up to either side of the arena, from where he will cast fire balls at the Hero. They are sticky and will remain burning on the ground for a short while. Keep on the move to avoid these.

Defense
Mesmeroth only uses his staff to defend himself, so when enganging in close-range combat, aim for his uncovered side or stun him with the shield before attacking. Unlike any other major mandatory boss enemy encountered (including Shadow Mesmeroth), he has no obvious weak-points and simply must be defeated by continuously attacking him directly.

Abilities[]

Magic[]

Mesmeroth is a practitioner of magic and proclaims to be more powerful than the hero can possibly imagine[72]. His demonstrated magical abilities are:

  • Casting a fire ball and shooting it at his opponent.
  • Creating a negative aura around himself that stuns the opponent upon attacking.
  • Teleporting himself and others to desired locations.
  • Summoning servant AI-souls to inhabit his automatons.
  • Creating an apparition of himself, that has the same mass and skills as the original to fight in his place.
  • Controlling TRILOTH.
  • Binding souls to objects, as he bound Sir Corbin’s soul to Gen.
  • Magically eliminating himself to leave his Anima Orb behind.

Combat[]

Mesmeroth has fought alongside knights in the Direfolk War as the most talented and skilled warlock to leave the Twin Towers.

  • He uses his staff to attack and slice his opponents.

Technology[]

Mesmeroth was interested in technology even as a child and rightfully considers it his expertise[73]. He has shown his talent in technology through:

  • Being able to make ancient technology function again.
  • Creating Gen and summoning a working servant AI-soul into him.
  • Being able to use ancient Beacon technology to create the hero, an artificial baby with a soul from another world.
  • He builds an entire robot armada with general foot soldiers and commanders, all infused with servant AI-souls. He creates a large command air ship, small airship units, large war freighters and smaller transport ships, simple guard spider-bots and a larger, more dangerous guard spider-bot.
  • It is suggested that Mesmeroth is involved with the Genco Corporation, as not only consists the whole company staff of automatons, but the company’s harbour factory in the White City also delivers weapons to the Riskbourne Citadel under the guise of transporting dangerous waste materials to a disposal site in the Outlands.

Equipment[]

Mesmeroth uses a magical staff, which features a half-circle blade around a bloodstone which ends in a thin pointed tip.

Trivia and Conjecture[]

Comparison-eyes

Difference in rendering of Mesmeroth's eyes on iPad versus Xbox.

  • Due to difference in rendering on different platforms, Mesmeroth's eyes can either be dark with only the glowing red pupil and iris be visible or they are brighter and reveal that the white of the eye is a glowing purple.
  • Mesmeroth's real name is Theo, as evidenced by the Anima Orbs he summons and uses and by a note from "Theo the Warlock" in the Pirta Beacon. Since there are uncertainies about the game evidence, this 'hypothesis' was evaluated here in more detail. Upon request to clear the matter up, Cornfox confirmed that Theo is indeed Mesmeroth's former name before he took on the mask.
  • Mesmeroth is Wicked Boy, the main subject of the Island of Whispers in Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas. Wicked Boy lived in Faroah Village, explored the Maintance Tunnels, felt a strong connection to magic and technology, and had failed robot experiments which caused trouble and strife in his hometown. He was 'rescued' by a Wise Man and went to the Capital to become a Warlock. This depiction matches Mesmeroth's descriptions on Cornfox & Bros social media sites and his presentation in Knights of the Lost Realm.
  • Mesmeroth bears some similarities to the iconic Star Wars character Darth Vader; both were raised in remote places (Faroah/Tatooine), both were young war heroes who had humble origins, but disagreements with their superiors (Archimedes and Obi-Wan Kenobi respectively) and manipulations by another villain in the franchise (the Shadow and Emperor Palpatine, respectively) caused them to fall into darkness. They also have their own troop army (the Dark Army and Stormtroopers) and their own huge, spherical ship (the Dark Chariot and Death Star). Mesmeroth also is a “father” to the protagonist Hero as he activated the Beacon to transport him to Arcadia and like Vader and Luke, they have a climactic battle (although it is actually Mesmeroth’s apparition Hero is fighting). Furthermore, when they are young, government agents (Archimedes/Qui-Gon Jinn) end up visiting them and they are discovered to have a talent in technology and manipulating the fabric that holds the universe together (Streams of Creation/The Force) and is taken to the capital (The White City/Coruscant) to train their powers with a group dedicated to the study of the universe's fabric. Both characters both become war heroes and are renowned for their prowess. The current ruler (Archimedes/Chancellor Palpatine) ends up banishing the group from the Capital (Mage Guild/Jedi Order) and use of those abilities is outlawed. [74]
