Hermit, formerly known as Master Maynard,[1] is Blackhat's friend and the Kid's tutor and guide. He is very knowledgable and prepares the Kid to fight and defeat Oceanhorn, by training him physically[2] and by guiding him towards the Sacred Emblems.

Appearance[]

Hermit is an elderly human man, with balding white hair and a big moustache. He wears a red, long-sleeved tunic with a wide collar, a red kilt with a heart-shaped symbol on the front, black trousers with knee-patches and small leather boots. A leather belt keeps the kilt in place.

Personality[]

He is quite caring, asking the Kid about his nightmares and making sure he is okay by diverting the Kid's focus.[3]

He can be quite strict in his training[2] and even somehwat ruthless, as he is sending the Kid inside a cave he himself has nightmares from.[4] He also likes to be mischievous, mysterious and bosses the Kid around a little.[5][6][7] Despite this, Hermit does recognize the Kid's abilities and is able to praise him[8] and proudly proclaims that he is a true Knight of Arcadia.[9]

Hermit appears to like picnics, as he has a nice spot marked up on a hill of Sonson Cliff.

Hermit comes from a long line of Arcadian Grandmasters, and is known as Master Maynard. However, he adopts the name "Hermit" for unknown reasons.[1]

Hermit is Blackhat's friend, who often came to Hermit's Island when he was younger.[10][3]

When Oceanhorn causes Blackhat to act quickly, he welcomes the Kid and takes care of him. He begins to train the Kid to prepare him for what's coming.

After the Kid's necklace helps him finds his father's old sword and shield earlier than Hermit wanted,[11] Hermit realises it's significance as Arcadian symbol[12] and tells the Kid the story of the downfall of Arcadia a thousand years ago. It is a long evening, however, and he sends the Kid to bed.[13]

The next morning Hermit is being attacked by two of the Dark Apostle's Spawn. The Kid comes to his aid. Hermit tells him about the Sacred Emblems, their importance in the rise of Oceanhorn and the Kids bond to the monster.[14] He then sends the Kid off to collect the Emblem of Earth by starting to talk to the people on Tikarel first.[15][16] He gives him the master key to access his sailboat.[17]

When the Kid has collected the Emblem of Earth, Hermit uses the seashell to contact the Kid, asking him to visit him.[18] He is waiting near the well for the Kid. He explains that inside the well is a package his friend Teppo once found and told him about. He never thought it was real[19] but now he believes it contains something that can aid them in their quests for the Sacred Emblems.[20] After the Kid recovers the package, Hermit begins to study its contents and sends the Kid onwards to find the Emblem of Ocean.[21][22]

When the Kid is in possession of the Emblem of Ocean also, Hermit contacts him again through the seashell, asking him once again to return to Hermit's Island.[23] Based on his knowledge and observations now about the Emblems, Hermit surmises that the curse of the Emblems hindered Gaia's recovery and healing the world from TRILOTH's toxics.[24] When the Kid finally returns, Hermit praises the boy for his abilities and tells him that the symbol of Arcadia the Emblem of Sun, is on Sky Island, once the heart of Arcadia.[9][25] He plans to send the Kid up to Sky Island and send the boy off to collect a few items for him: a stool, a travel bed, a firebowl, a weather cuckoo and finally the Kid's sailboat. Once the Kid has all items, he begins to construct a small airship, which then lifts the Kid off the ground and up to Sky Island.

He congratulates the Kid through the seashell when Sky Island descends back down into the Uncharted Seas. He urges the boy to prepare in every possible way before facing Oceanhorn.[26]

Equipment[]

  • Mysterious Seashell - By using the seashell, Hermit can communicate with the Kid wherever he is in the Uncharted Seas.[27]

Hermit is featured on one the five Steam trading cards available, using the following description:[28]

Trivia[]

  • Hermit (OH) bears great likeliness to Master Mayfair (OH2). They both have a red color scheme and are elderly gentlemen who have the role of tutor and guide to the protagonist. Master Mayfair uses 'Hermit' as psyeudonym to rent a small study in the Red Herring Inn of the White City.[29] They are also both voiced by Kevan Brighting. Another similarity between the two is that one of the quotes Mayfair can say as a party member after the group of knights clears an area of enemies is “Begone you devils”. Hermit says this exact line when being attacked by spawn.
