The Grand Core is a giant machinery built underneath the White City, providing power supply to not only Arcadia but also Pirta and Submeria as well. Its final purpose, however, is to harness the power of the Sacred Emblems when they sit on their respective Beacons, in order to lift the White City Palace up and beyond the atmosphere to reach the Lunar Tear. Based on ancient blueprints, it was realized by Grand Regent Archimedes and built by his countless engineers.[1]

It serves as the fourth and final major dungeon in Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas and as an optional dungeon in Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm.

General[]

The Grand Core is Archimedes’s most magnificent work.[2] At its center lies the Teramite Engine, which has the potential to produce enough power to fill all the energy needs of the entire (inhabited) planet.[3] The Teramite Engine is so powerful that it keeps not just the Grand Core itself, but also all of Sky Island floating in the sky for a thousand year.[4] It contains dozen more power machinations that keep the whole system running. Before the Grand Core was begun to be constucted, there was no electricity and no computer terminals. Now, it provides unlimited energy and is the important means of communication for the people of Arcadia.[5]

During the childhood of Master Mayfair, the lands north of the White City were only farmlands and small settlements. But since the construction of the Grand Core began, the large pipes required to expand the Grand Core's reach across Arcadia and Gaia have changed the appearance of the landscape substiantially, driving people away from there.[6][7][8]

With the return of the Sacred Emblems to their Beacons in Pirta and Submeria, Grand Core Terminals are installed in each nation. Their speedy setup shows the anticipation and preparation of the Arcadian technicians to expand the reach of the giant machine.[9] The technicians working on the Grand Core share excitement and pride for the project.[10][11]

In OH2 people are able to visit and view parts of the Grand Core's interior. In the deeper parts, hidden away from view, lies Archimedes’s secret spaceship, which is later meant to lift off into space.

History[]

On the day Calliope dies, Trinity opens a store cube by chance. It displays the holographic blueprints of the Grand Core and a spaceship leaving Gaia towards a vessel in its orbit.[12] Since then Archimedes works tirelessly on the completion of the Grand Core to take his dead wife to the place that the blueprints showed: the Lunar Tear, which could also lead to the return to the world where the Emblems came from.

Pre-Catastrophe[]

After the return of their first mission, Hero has the time to explore the Grand Core in the White City. Inside he finds a passage, leading to the stored prototype of Archimedes's Shield of Chronos.

When TRILOTH approaches the White City, Archimedes heads into the Grand Core, ready to power it up. He is confronted by Mesmeroth inside the machine and prompted to operate the Grand Core for definite purpose. Since not all the Sacred Emblems are in place, however, the Grand Core has not enough power and merely lifts the White City Palace up into the air, keeping it afloat there for the next thousand years. Mesmeroth’s spirit (stored inside an Anima Orb) is merged with the Shadow, and their combined spirit lives inside the large machines for a long time.

Post-Catastrophe[]

Grand Core entrance

The Kid enters the Grand Core.

The late White City Palace and Grand Core are now known as Sky Island. No one has been able to reach up there, nor have the people living up there been able to come down. Shadow Mesmeroth took control of the Grand Core's operating system, making it unreadable for the scholars on Sky Island.[13][14] He speaks to a young scholar studying the Arcadian code and causes him to go mad. His demand for the Emblem of Sun remains unanswered, as it disappears with Mary, its bearer, down to Gaia's surface.

Around twenty years later, using some old technological plans made by Archimedes, Hermit builds a small airship out of Kid's boat, with which the boy is able to reach Sky Island. Upon arriving there and after meeting Grandmaster Ludwig, the crazed scholar meets him at the storm shelter and asks him to throw a bomb at an electrical power station. This finally opens the Grand Core and the scholar rushes there to offer the Emblem of Sun to his “master.” The Kid enters the Grand Core as well and is able to pick up and use the original Shield of Chronos before then facing Shadow-Mesmeroth and defeating him.

This frees up the Grand Core systems to operate normally[15] and it brings the whole of Sky Island back down onto the surface of Gaia, where it reconnects with the remaining power system that was once built all over Gaia.[16]
