The Gillfolk are a humanoid race on Gaia, adapted to life in and around sea water. Their realm is Submeria, a collection of islands and lagoons in the middle of Gaia's ocean, surrounded by Arcadia, Pirta and the Outlands. Their known settlements are Gillfolk's Grotto and Gillfolk's Drop.

Gillfolk only appear in Monster of Uncharted Seas and Knights of the Lost Realm, but their existence is referenced in Chronos Dungeon.

Appearance[]

Gillfolk are humanoid creatures whose anatomy is very similar to humans. A notable difference is, of course, their skin, which is adapted for being in wet environments and comes in various color tones (red, green and blue). They typically do not wear any clothes, except for King Angler and Princess Fin. Females in OH2 have visible (albeit covered) breasts, but other than that neither females nor males show other human-like genitalia despite the nudity.

Appearance in Oceanhorn 2[]

These Gillfolk have fins on the backside of their forearms and on their calves, as well as along their spine on their backs. Several long fins reach from their foreheads to the back of their neck. There are also two branches of appendixes just below their collarbones, covering parts their chest. Apart from Princess Fin, all other Gillfolk have two human-sized ears at the sides of their heads.

Most Gillfolk have very large pupils, or very dark irises, hiding the white of their eyes entirely. Steelscale is an individual with completely yellow eyes.

Appearance in Oceanhorn[]

These Gillfolk are generally very similar to their counterparts in OH2. There are two bigger differences, however. First, these Gillfolk have two large crests or fins starting at their forehead, that circle around the back of their heads to and around their necks a couple of times. In case of Princess Fin, hers is colored golden, which has been replaced with reddish fins on her head and a golden, solid necklace around her neck in Knights of the Lost Realm.

The second difference are the number of eyes. All Gillfolk in OH have two small, black human-like eyes in the front, but also two large fish-like eyes at the sides of their heads. While their purpose as 'eyes' is not quite as clear in the young ones (and Princess Fin who retains her fish-eyes in OH2), the Old Gillman clearly demonstrates their purpose, as his have moved slightly forward and are blinking while he talks to the Kid.

The Old Gillman is also the only old specimen visible, all other members of the Gillfolk are in their prime years, including those of OH2.

Ageing[]

Gillfolk can live up to a thousand years. The oldest Gillman is the Old Gillman who speaks to the Kid in OH1 - he is at least 1,100 years old.[1]

Origins[]

Ootheca-hall-of-birth2

According to legends, the first Gillfolk were born inside Ootheca[2] and carried outside into Submeria by the steel servants.[3] Inside Ootheca are Halls of Birth, that still show the pillars on which the Anima Orbs containing Gillfolk souls were stored.[4]

History[]

After their birth, the Gillfolk populated the islands and lagoons of Submeria. Up until the creation of the unified Arcadia, the relationship between the Gillfolk and other races was difficult.[5][6] Despite that, a Gillfolk blacksmith created a gift for an Arcadian King around two hundred years prior of the Catastrophe.[7]

During the latest Direfolk War, the Gillfolk agree to hand the Emblem of Ocean to Archimedes and they send Princess Fin as Ambassador of the Gillfolk and protector of the Emblem to the White City. In the years after the removal of the Emblem, the Gillfolk prepare and succesfully imprison Yurmala, a giant turtle that is feeding on Gillfolk homes. It is kept inside Ootheca by utilizing the electricity of Thunderstones.

The tourist sign of the Great Lagoon mentions the Submerian City, a place of great splendor.[8] While there was a time when Gillfolk lived there and all around Ootheca in the Great Lagoon, in the year just before the Catastrophe, Gillfolk can only be found in their small settlement of Gillfolk's Grotto.[8]

Hero and his fellow Knights defeat Yurmala for good and re-install the Emblem of Ocean on top of Ootheca. Soon after the Catastrophe destroys Ootheca and Princess Fin carries the Emlem into the Gillfolk Palace, where it is being held for the next thousand years.

Some time after the Catastrophe, King Angler dies.[9][10] Disguised as a mourning gift, the Dark Apostle delivers a curse.[11] Unknowingly Princess Fin carries it to her dead father and when it activates all of the Royal Palace is frozen, including herself and one other Gillman.[12] The remaining Gillfolk move to Gillfolk's Drop, a cave nearby their Palace where they seek refuge from the aftermath of the Catastrophe and to watch over their Palace and Princess. Some of the Gillfolk regard this a betrayal by the humans and blame them for the spoiling of the ocean.[13]

A thousand years later, the Kid arrives to collect the Emblem of Ocean. By defeating the cursed Dead King Angler, he manages to lift the curse from the Royal Palace and the two Gillfolk inside. Princess Fin returns to her people and the Emblem of Ocean is given away once more in order to welcome a new beginning for Gaia.[14][15] The restoration of the Palace will take some time,[16] but the Gillfolk are thankful.[17]

  • The chest appendixes of the OH2 Gillfolk remind of the branchial (gill) plume of some nudibranches, which essentially are their lungs to breathe under water. More about nudibranchs on Wikipedia.
  • Gillfolk love honey. In OH1 it is a quest item as it's required to enter Deep Cove. In OH2 a Gillman asks "Any honey", referring to this event of OH1.
